bstract: The aim of this paper is to introduce John Philoponus’ Against Aristotle on the Eternity of the World and its reception in the Arabic tradition. This important philosophical work of the Late Greek period is, unfortunately, lost and only fragments of it preserved in Greek and Arabic, assembled and translated into English by Christian Wildberg. This paper sheds light on some main issues treated and the arguments advanced in this book as well as on some aspects of its reception in the history of philosophy and science, mainly in the medieval Islamic world. It demonstrates that the book put forward unprecedented ideas that generated strong discussion in the Middle Ages and, therefore, contributed to the progress of science in the modern era. Thus, based on a descriptive and historical method, it begins by introducing the author and the context in which the book was composed, then presents its structure and content; and finally, explores some aspects of its reception in Arabic and its impact on later scholars. In the appendix, some of the preserved fragments of this book are assembled and partially re-edited.
